I am extremely proud to announce that Project Apex (which was announced on June 5th) has been accepted as a project by  the Apache Incubator. Apex was created in response to customer demand for a community to support the DataTorrent RTS core engine. Apex addresses enterprise fault-tolerance, performance, scalability and ease-of-use requirements for unified stream and batch processing. The incubator proposal can be found here.   To keep up on incubator news, follow  Apache Apex on Twitter @ApacheApex.

Per the Apache Foundation guidelines, the project will become a podling and will be known as Apache Apex (incubating) while undergoing Incubation at the Apache Software Foundation. As an Apache Incubator project, enterprises have open source access to the core engine that forms the foundation of DataTorrent RTS 3, as well as the Malhar library of operators for common business logic and easy integration of Hadoop with other systems.

Granting the Project Apex license to the Apache Software Foundation is an important first step to building a thriving open source community. Apache Apex (incubating) is the only open source solution that addresses enterprise performance and reliability, enabling end-to-end data pipelines to leverage Hadoop, with the ease of use and interoperability needed to drive business value for enterprises.

While under incubation, the project will move to the Apache infrastructure and adopt the community-driven development principles of the Apache Foundation. Projects can graduate from incubation to become top-level projects if they show activity, a healthy community dynamic and regular releases. The project status is located here.

The Apache Incubator was established by The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) and allows all open source software projects from external organizations to join the Apache Community. Affiliations with the project include individuals from Apple, Barclays, CapitalOne, Class Software, Datachief, DirecTV, E8security, General Electric, Hortonworks, MapR and Silver Spring Networks.
