The best chance of justifying a jump start for the industrial technology refresh cycle and corresponding OT/IT convergence process is NOT cost savings alone. Cost savings alone are not compelling enough to drive decision-makers to change legacy systems and accept all of the cultural pain and additional risk that it brings. The game changers that will push OT and IT together are new IT innovations (applied to industrial automation) that have not been possible in the past and that create impossible-to-ignore competitive advantages/ROI. Areas such as ubiquitous mobile connectivity and IP networking, new sensor technologies, improved automation software and connectivity platforms and machine-learning systems sit at the intersection of industrial automation, OT/IT convergence and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). These game changers taken together will create far more value any other tech transitions in recent memory.
